Syro Malabar Catholic church is one of the 23 Eastern Churches forming the communion of churches under spiritual guidance of Pope Francis. Syro Malabar Church in India was established by St. Thomas, the Apostle in AD 52. In its formative stage, the church had a relationship with East Syrian Church and was influenced by them. Therefore, even though it is an individual church, it is counted in the Chaldean (East Syrian) family.
Syro Malabar catholic community took its roots in Canada on account of the immigration of Syro Malabar Catholics from Kerala & other part of the world. The local church (Latin Church) provided these immigrant Catholics with pastoral care from early 1960s.
Erection of Syro Malabar Apostolic Exarchate: On August 6, 2015, Holy Father Pope Francis, through his decree of Erection, institutionalized the Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro Malabar Catholics in Canada and appointed Rev.
